Can't Help But Try

by Kevin Sinclair

Trying to put a name to the face
I know I've seen you before
Maybe it was in one of my dreams
Where you were the lady in distress
And I was the hero
Who came to the rescue
But you saved me instead.

She smiled
I could see that she thought
I was insane
A man can't help but try
Any line that's imaginative
It depends on your terms of reference
And your definition of success.

I bought her a drink
And sat myself down
Looking for some conversation
But the openings weren't there
I'm going to have to change my approach
If I want to make that lady mine
I sighed and moved on.

She smiled
You've got to try a bit harder
Don't let a rejection
Throw you way off course
Continue to be creative
But don't be too different
You'll win in the end.
