By Richard Adams On Tuesday I received 423 emails from an unknown spammer attacking my site. On Wednesday I received 789 emails from the same spammer. Action had to be taken. The emails were copies of posts to my discussion forum - the typical spammers posts - keyword stuffing, numerous hyperlinks to junk sites crammed with even more keywords. It was clear I was being hit by one spammer, with an automated script, for a number of telltale reasons: 1) Nobody could post 789 posts to a forum in 24 hours manually 2) All posts were from random .co.za email addresses (South African domains, but likely false) 3) All posts pointed to very similar spammy sites obviously made with the same auto-generation software 4) Checking various domains promoted within these posts in WHOIS showed they were all owned by a certain guy in Paris I carefully combed my forum for these junk posts but couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. So I checked for posts by .co.za email addresses, or French IPs but couldn't see a problem anywhere. Where were they coming from, and where were the posts? To help me in my quest I did a search on Google for the text that began every email which read: "The following was posted in the <website name> on <time> <date>" But couldn't find any links that were any help. So next I investigated the content of the emails for common factors and found the following Javascript snippet began every message body: "var defDoor"... before launching into other Javascript elements, followed by the keywords and links. I wonder... A quick search on Google and two factors astonished me... 1) Google showed up 92,600 pages with this code on, of which every one I checked matched the exact spam posts I was seeing in style and content. So we were dealing with a professional of some magnitude. 2) They were all on forums, but not the one I used, but WWWBoard as available from http://www.scriptarchive.com/wwwboard.html A quick search with my FTP software through the bowels of my admittedly large site that has been online for 5 years or so and has seen more reworkings than Pamela Anderson showed I *had* got WWWBoard installed on my site but had stopped using it years ago in place of my current forum software. I had completely forgotten about it, and there were the hundreds of spam posts sitting there on my server! Obviously I don't use the script so instantly deleted it and the spamming stopped dead overnight but if I'm one of over 90,000 victims this guy has duped then a little advice is necessary: 1) Appreciate that there are security flaws to WWWBoard and you either need to watch your forum very carefully or consider switching to another script. 2) Don't leave old scripts sitting around on your server waiting for spammers to abuse them. Use them, or delete them. 3) Try to avoid using obvious folders for scripts. Whilst I didn't link to my old forum from anywhere on the site, it was in an obvious folder so a spammer (or a script) could easily have guessed it. 4) Realise that security threats are very real if you get reasonable traffic and take steps *in advance* to minimize the risk to your own site. --------------------------------------------- Finally, the First Practical, Step-By-Step, Roadmap

Affiliate marketing is no exception. By creating multiple streams of income it ensures your survival should one source fail for any reason. Having multiple streams of income can be equated to McDonalds serving chicken sandwiches even though they're a burger joint. If you put all your eggs in one basket you're just looking for trouble. Also, as an affiliate it's fairly easy to setup multiple streams of income because there is usually an abundance of different programs with decent products available. Within most niches you'll probably even be able to find products that complement each other instead of competing with each other. This is an excellent way to bolster your affiliate earnings. The first order of business is to get your own web site. Something basic will do as you won't need too much web space. There are very inexpensive hosting plans available today, some as cheap as $3.95 a month. Next you'll need a domain name. These are also very inexpensive and can be purchased for under $10 for a whole year. Your domain name is very important. You'll want to try to include the name of the niche you're targeting in the domain name itself if you can and if it's not too long. If you're looking at the dog grooming niche for example you may want a name like "doggroomingtips.com" or "doggroomingsecrets.com" or something similar. The next project on your agenda when attempting to achieve multiple streams of affiliate income should be to create your email capture page. Your capture page should be your top priority. Consider this your sales page even though you won't be selling anything in the true sense of the word. By capturing the name and email address of your prospects before sending them to the merchants site you'll build a list that you can send other offers to whether they purchase from the original merchant or not. It's been said many times by the internet's top marketers, "The money's in the list"! This rings true for affiliate marketers as well as product creators. You can build a list by writing a special report pertaining to the niche you're targeting. Perhaps you can write a review of the product you're promoting or a "top ten" list of reasons to use the product. Offer the report for free so long as your visitor leaves their name and email address. Use a double opt-in autoresponder to protect yourself from unethical folks. After the prospect has confirmed their address send them to the download page of your special report. And a word of advice - Don't just send a download link. By sending them to an HTML web page you can sprinkle in links to different affiliate products. Also, write up 7-10 emails to go out at 2-3 day intervals, each highlighting a different aspect of the main product you're promoting. Then you can add more emails to go out at 7-10 day intervals exposing your readers to different products in the same niche. Explain how these products complement your main product and why your reader would benefit from the purchase. By setting up a few of these simple sites offering an array of special reports in one niche you'll be promoting several different affiliate products within that niche. Find a variety of other profitable niches to target, repeat the above process and soon you'll have a whole network of sites funnelling prospects into your sales process. Have you ever tried to control things or events over which you had no control? Do you find that stressful? There are different typed of stressful situations. Some, like people interrupting you all the time, you can control. You can let the interrupters know you are busy and don't have time to talk. Other stresses, like rush hour traffic, are usually beyond your control. But there are some things about rush hour traffic that you can personally change which may help; taking a different route, for example, or traveling at a different time. Of course, these changes are not always possible. In that case, you have to change your attitude about the situation, in order to lessen the stress. You can listen to music or educational tapes or books-on-tape. Rush hour traffic won't seem as frustrating because you'll be doing something to help keep your mind off the traffic and other drivers. In order to let go of commute stress, you have to accept the situation. You must accept that you cannot control the traffic, no matter how much you yell and gesture at other drivers to speed up. A stressful commute can ruin your whole day, don't let it! Accept that, if you are unable to change your route, or your time of travel, you are powerless over everything on the road, with the exception of your car and your attitude. Control your attitude, let go of the traffic, and you can control your stress! You can learn to manage a great deal of your stress by asking looking at each stressor and asking yourself "Can I control it, can I change it, or do I need to learn to let it go? The "control, change, or let go" concept is an important key to stress management. We spend too much time worrying about things over which we have no control that we have no energy left to control the things we can. We become so overwhelmed, that we feel like our whole life is out of control and we'll never catch up. Once you understand the "control, change, or let go" concept and start putting it into practice you will be able to deal much better with stressful situations. So much of our stress comes from trying to control other people, places and things when we simply cannot. We are the ones who end up with the stress and resulting headaches! The people we try to control go home, or simply ignore us, barely giving us a thought. That's why it is so easy to build up resentments against other people in situations or jobs when we don't think we have much control. On the job, it impedes productivity and healthy teamwork. People tend to blame other people. If you are stressed out because of others, it's important to go through the steps of control, change and letting go. Unless you are ready to leave your job, family, or the planet earth, chances are you will continue working or being around the "stressful people." Ask yourself if the other person is actually a "stress carrier," or simply has a different style. Letting go is a process. It takes time, and doesn't always happen at once just because we will it. We have to use our thoughts to control our emotions and our actions. Remind yourself that there are people and events you cannot control. All you can control is your attitude and your reactions. Its possible to change yourself-talk about the situation. Identify which stresses you can control, take appropriate action, and learn to let go of the things you can't. Pick something in your life that stresses you out. Can you control it? If so, what can you do? Can you change it? If so, how? Perhaps you can only change or control a part of it. Do you need to let it go? If so, what can you do in order to let go? You can view life as unexpected and exciting or your can view it as scary because you don't know what the future holds.
