By Mike Banks Valentine Running ranking reports for clients is a standard part of an SEO's job. This week I created a position report for a client - one for which we'd made significant gains in ranking for their targeted search phrase - and proudly sent off the report to them before a scheduled conference call to discuss our progress and status. The client sent an email upon receiving the report saying "There is something wrong with your report - we rank higher than this report claims." I went back to Google and typed in the search phrases to find rankings exactly where the report showed them the previous day. I explained to that client that Google has (at last count) nine data centers which serve up search results and that they were getting results from a data center in the Eastern US which showed differing results from results shown to us here in California. The difference was substantial enough to move the client from page two to page one in the search results and therefore made a dramatic difference in their satisfaction with our work. Differences are rarely that substantial in previously observed ranking reports, so it prompted me to dig a bit deeper into the issue and I sent the note below to the client. "Take a look at this link where Google datacenter IP addresses are listed in detail." http://www.webworkshop.net/seoforum/viewtopic.php?t=548 "Here is an overview of a coming update to all Google datacenters expected in February or March of 2006." http://directmag.com/searchline/1-25-06-Google-BigDaddy/ "So you ARE ranking better from your area of the country and that particular data center which returns results to you. Things usually update to match in all data centers, but sometimes you may do better in one data center than in others. If you search from each individual IP address in that list discussed in the forum linked above, you'll see different rankings and may find datacenters where you rank at the bottom of page two of results." You might also search from that new "Big Daddy" data center referenced in that article above, which discusses upcoming Google ranking algorithm changes due soon. http://66.249.93.104 Where I'm seeing you ranked at #17 (bottom of page two.) It's a measure of where you might expect to be when Google moves to that new algorithm for all data centers in February or March. (Of course we continue to work to achieve better results before then.) This upcoming change in algorithm and the interestingly named server "Big Daddy" were publicly posted on Matt Cutts blog for beta testing by SEO's (and other Google Watchers) who read him regularly. (For those who don't know, Cutts is a software engineer at Google & shares SEO tips on his blog) http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/ Of course this news was a bit much for the client to digest in one chunk and he had little time to read the articles I referenced in my note above, but it was enough to assure him that I knew what I was talking about and explain the differences in my report and his own keyword searches at his end of the country. It's a bit odd to try to explain to a client "there are different Googles." Few know or understand this. Another issue cropped up later in the day when I was doing further research for a different client and found, while we were speaking on the phone, that his results differed from my own on specific query operator searches. We were using the "site:businessdomain.com" query operator and the "allinurl:pick-your-own-URL" query operator to limit search results and got vastly different numbers of results and rankings for the same searches. The first stunning thing in this example was that we are less than 25 miles apart in Southern California. The second shocker was that I tried simply hitting the "Search" button a second time after getting the first results page and things changed again! All of this happening in a single day makes me believe that some percolating of results is going on as Google eases into an algorithm change. Perhaps this is not all that unusual, but in seven years of this work, I've not seen the volatility noted in January of 2006. Are we about to have a major SearchQuake? Is Google about to split the earth and spew volcanic new results? Stand by for the BigDaddy SearchQuake sometime this month or next.

It's by far the best free method of promoting your business and increasing your sales and opt in subscribers. By submitting your articles to article directories, article announcement lists, and ezine publishers, you accomplish several things. First, you establish yourself as an expert in your field. Readers are more likely to listen to you if they feel you know what you are talking about. Second, by attaching a resource box to your article, you are giving the reader a link to your website. If the reader is impressed with your knowledge, they will likely click on your link to see what it is that you are offering. Third, you increase your search engine page rank by providing a non-reciprocal link to your website. Search engines seem to give extra weight to non-reciprocal links in their page rankings. But many marketers are not comfortable writing their own articles. They just do not know how to put their thoughts into words. Or worse yet, they do not have any thoughts worth printing. That is why private label articles are in such high demand these days. There are several of these services available and more seem to be popping up every day. Therein lies the problem. Depending on how these articles are used, the results can be good, bad, or downright ugly. The Good: As stated previously, private label articles, when used correctly, can give the non-writer a big advantage over other marketers. They can increase your traffic, sales, and opt in subscribers. That is good. The Bad: A common mistake made by marketers using private label articles is getting lazy. They simply copy and paste the article and submit it, as is, with no personalization. At the very least, you should change the title. Most article directories require that your article be approved before they are posted. But do you really think they read every article that comes in? Not likely. They get dozens, even hundreds of submissions every day, so it's unlikely that your article will actually be read. But most directory software will automatically search their database for duplicate titles. If the title of your article matches one in their database, yours will be rejected. So do yourself a favor and at the very least, change the title. It might also be a good idea to change the wording in the first paragraph. The Ugly: Many marketers load so many links in their article that it becomes one long ad. This will not only get you rejected, but eventually banned if you do it often enough. A good article contains useful information to the reader whether they buy your products or not. Give them good content and you will increase the chances that they will click your link in the resource box. Private label articles are a great tool, but do not get lazy!

Brain/Mind Researcher Scientists once thought that the brain we are born with totally determines our intelligence and mental potential. In some cases this certainly can be said to be true. But when it comes to the “average” and “above average” brain – it seems we are all born with at least one very powerful potential. What is that potential? The potential to develop a high performance mind that more fully represents our true capabilities. We now know that our brains are so changeable that a new scientific term had to be developed – brain plasticity. And the scientific evidence in the last ten years has proven beyond a doubt that genius is not a born quality – it is developed (and can be learned). And the same is true for high performance minds. So how can this be accomplished? There are basically three secrets to developing a high performance mind. ** Secret # 1. Genius has been directly connected to the number of interconnections between your neurons (brain cells). How are such interconnections created? Through mental challenge and stimulation. So, although most brains could be said to be potentially equal at birth – after that, something new comes into play. We are far more than our genetic makeup. Albert Einstein, for example, was severely dyslexic as a youngster. He actually had great problems learning to speak, and even walk. Yet he became one of the greatest geniuses of our time. After his death it was discovered that his brain was basically different from the ‘normal’ brain in only one way – the density of interconnections he had created among his neurons. Einstein’s preferred method of bringing new insights into his mind was discovered after his death. So the first secret to developing a high performance mind is the adoption of smart methods of use that will expand the complexity of your neural interconnections. **Secret #2. The first secret (use) will develop the complexity of your brain, and your potential for genius-level thinking. But this brings us to secret #2 – the issue of ‘state vs content.’ The ‘content’ of your mind corresponds to what you have managed to learn and remember. And this, in turn, tends to determine what you can think. Some psychologists claim we actually ARE our memory. They do have a point -– since it is the combined content of your conscious and subconscious memories that makes you unique. But the ‘state’ of your brain is quite a different thing indeed. The state of your brain refers to the actual physical characteristics of how your brain works. That is, how your brainwaves combine to create and use the “contents” of your mind. For example, if your current mental contents are focused on solving a problem, but the state of your brain is locked into high stress Gamma brainwaves, the probability you will solve that problem is very low indeed – because the state of your brain simply does NOT support your goal. **Secret #3. So regardless of your IQ or memory banks – the state of your brain creates and controls what you will (or will not) manage to achieve in your life. And stress is NOT the only limiting factor. When it comes to actually achieving what you desire – your ability to generate high performance brain states is the TRUE limiting factor. Until you learn to hold the brainwave state of high achiever, you will have built-in limits. This is a physical reality that no amount of positive thinking or goal-setting can overcome. **Do High Achievers Have Special Brains? Numerous research studies have established the fact that super successful people all share certain personality traits and habits.
